About
Treating patients as an independent private psychotherapy practitioner for over 30 years initially in South Africa, and currently (since 1995) in Ontario, Canada, using evidence based therapies in an integrative and collaborative based approach.
Volunteered as a professional counsellor for bereavement groups for adults and children at Bereaved Families of Ontario (Toronto Metro Area) for 5 years, and served on various committees within the organization.
Regular attendance of conferences and workshops highlighting novel and current trends in psychological treatment of patients (individual & couples) including the mind/body connection orientations. I am a strong proponent of Mindful Meditation Stress Relief strategies and have attended workshops given in this topic by internationally acknowledged experts (such as Jon Kabat-zinn), and continue to practice and provide services in this area.
My practice makes use of the following methodologies where applicable, with the ultimate focus of fostering a good therapeutic alliance (i.e. the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on automatic thought patterns that can propel emotions and behaviors. It thus encourages the client to question habits (which could be characterized as default modes) and belief systems.
Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) is derived from CBT where the focus is on intense emotions and thoughts that are "dialectic" in the sense that they make imposing demands on the client. The therapy aims to help the client to accept or change their reactions and behaviors by making choices to the healthiest option.
The above 2 modes do offer homework assignments as an adjunct to stimulating the impetus in the therapy.
Short Term Psychodynamic Therapy (PDT) places more emphasis on the role of the unconscious processes by exploring the relationship of the past to the present. Inner conflicts that arise for the client during openminded discussions of which the client had not been previously aware of, facilitates the gaining of insight and connections for the client towards a deeper understanding of their self and their world.
